Founded in 2000, the Institute of Statistics at Zhejiang University now boasts 4 full professors, 11 associate professors and 6 lecturers, of whom 1 holds the honor of National High Education Famous Teacher, and Zhejiang Provincial Top Expert, one Ministry of Education's New Century Talent.
The institute is responsible for curriculum design and teaching task of undergraduate and post graduate students majoring in statistics in Mathematical Department, and campus-wide public course teaching of Theory of Probability, Mathematical Statistics and Random Process. Thus its teaching tasks are wide in coverage and heavy in workload. “Theory of probability" once won the honor as a Zhejiang Provincial level Outstanding Course. Statistics laboratory is in charge of various applied statistics projects, making use of statistics software of different kinds to analyze and handle data, and offering consultation to relevant statistics issues.
Institute of Statistics boasts strong research capability, a lively academic atmosphere and impressive achievement. The probability limit theory area, on which it has concentrated its superior research power, has become our country's important base for probability limit theory study and talent cultivation. In the last 5 years, the institute has won one general project in Zhejiang's Natural Science Foundation, 1 project in Zhejiang Excellent Youth Team, 1 in Zhejiang Excellent Youth foundation; 1 in Ministry of Education Cross-century Outstanding Talent, 4 in National Natural Science Foundation Youth Foundation, 7 in its surface programs. In addition, it has also seen the publication of more than 100 articles, several of them in top probability and statistics journals and two books on special topics. Chao Guangbiao chair professor SHAO Qiman was invited in 2010 to make a 45-minute presentation at International Mathematician Congress, and Doctor Liu Wei Dong won "Country's 100 Excellent Ph.D. Degree theses".
