Scope
The school aims at design and analysis of algorithms for
dealing with hard optimization problems arising in practice. The topics
are on on-line algorithms and approximation algorithms with provable
performance guarantees in computer science such as server location,
resource management in parallel and distributed systems, bin packing,
robust algorithms, scheduling with precedence constraints. In particular,
the school will cover recent advances in the design and analysis of approximation
algorithms and propose some open problems.
Intensive exchange of knowledge between researchers from the different
areas of theoretical computer science and optimization is expected.
The main objective of the school is to expose the graduate students as
well as young researchers in optimization, computer science to the front
line of research topics usually not covered within the regular curricula.
The working language is
English.
The Spring school will take place in
Zhejiang University
, located in the center of
Hangzhou
, on March 13-18, 2005. Ph.D. students (as well as
advanced Master students)
, postdocs
, junior researchers, and others interested in participating
can now officially apply for this event following the
instructions
.
This event is organized by
Group "Algorithmic Theory and Application",
Department of Mathematics,

How to Participate
Participation is open to all qualified applicants in optimization
and computer science, but the number of participants will be limited
to a maximum of about 40. Students who want to participate in
the school should send an application letter with a short CV (stating
also the previous knowledge in fields related to the theme of the school.
Both in English and in Chinese are acceptable. ) and a brief letter
of reference by a university professor to the following address until
February
28, 2005.
Application per email is preferable.
Because of the limited number of participants we strongly recommend
an early application.

Organization and Location
Location: The school will be held in Zhejiang University,
located in the center of Hangzhou, a beautiful city in southeastern
China with rich cultural heritage as well as fine traditional products
such as silk and tea. Honored as "the most beautiful and magnificent city
in the world" by the Italian traveler Marco Polo, Hangzhou was the capital
of China in the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279). As a tourist resort with
world fame, it now boasts many scenic spots and historic sites such as West
Lake, Soul Conceal Buddhist Temple and Six-Harmony Pagoda as well as four
national museums of silk, tea, traditional Chinese medicine and pottery respectively.
Hangzhou enjoys a mild climate throughout the year with
four distinct seasons of special beauty. Hangzhou is only two hours
from Shanghai by train or by bus.
How to get to Hangzhou
From Shanghai Pudong International Airport (SPIA)
Take the Airport Bus Line, one can directly from Shanghai to
Hangzhou. The bus shall arrive in Hangzhou (near Yellow Dragon
Sports Center) in about 2 and half hours and the fee is 100 RMB (about
