Gu Chaohao (1926-2012): A mathematician native of Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province. He graduated from the Department of Mathematics, Zhejiang University in 1948. In 1959, he received the Ph.D. degree in Physics and Mathematics from Lomonosov Moscow State University. He was the professor at Fudan University, winner of the 2009 National Highest Science and Technology Award, and became a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1980.

He specialized in research and teaching of partial differential equations, differential geometry, mathematical physics, etc. He achieved systematic and important research results in general spatial differential geometry, homogeneous Riemannian spaces, infinite dimensional transformation quasigroups, hyperbolic and mixed partial differential equations, gauge field theory, harmonic mapping and soliton theory. In particular, he proposed for the first time the high-dimensional, high-order mixed equations and system theory, and made important breakthroughs in the research on the mathematical problems of supersonic flow, the mathematical structure of the gauge field, wave mapping and the soliton of high-dimensional space-time.
