Title: Irreversible thermodynamics and its link with system theory and control
Abstract: The universal character of classical thermodynamics comes from the fact that it does not deal with a restricted class of systems and does not depend on any model nor assumptions on the structure of matter. One of the core quantities that is considered in thermodynamics is the energy of the considered system. Indeed as its name indicates, thermodynamics is concerned with the transformations of energy between its different forms. The objective of this seminar is to present a synthesis of some recent results that allows to make the link between irreversible thermodynamics and system theory. One of the idea is to introduce physical insight into dynamical system theory when applied to reaction systems in general and to chemical processes in particular for process control. Due to the central role of energy transfers and transformations and of the second law on the evolution of the process state and hence on its dynamical behaviour, the objective is to interpret system theory results for reaction systems in terms of energy and entropy considerations.
