Abstract: The notion of Mathieu subspaces was introduced by the speaker in 2009, which can be viewed as a natural but highly non-trivial generalization of the notion of ideals of associative algebras. In this talk we will discuss the definition, motivations and some recent developments of Mathieu subspaces. Furthermore, some open problems on Mathieu subspaces, especially, the connections of Mathieu subspaces with the famous Jacobian conjecture, will also be discussed. The talk will be introductory and accessible to the general audience.
